He matters

Posted by Julie Sheasby on 13 Jan 2009

One of our big 12 values is Unity and Diversity. We understand that people matter to God - whatever our shape, size, age, ethnicity, background, job or theological perspective, we cherish our diversity yet recognise that our power is in our mutuality and togetherness. What a challenge! Is this everyone’s experience at HBC?
The following poem is written for anyone who feels on the edge of HBC for whatever reason, but on a personal level it’s for Neill.

He Matters

Searching and searching
the journey feels never ending.
When will he find a
place of rest?
Refusing to simply
settle for less,
to live a
two dimensional existence
playing along with the crowd.
Unafraid to ask questions
he wonders,
Is this really how it’s meant to be?

Limping for the journey’s
been hard.
Poorly prepared
he inevitably flounders.
Yet,
Faith will not disappoint.
Abused and wounded
Misunderstood and overlooked
He struggles alone.

In all church activity
And striving for more
Do we miss the point?
It’s about you
It’s about me
United in Christ.

Are we too busy?
Doing worthwhile events
Excellent outreach
Vibrant worship
We fail to notice
those on the edge.
Scarce time or space
for the weak.
Only if you’re doing
do you find a home here.
The contemplative
Well,
they get left behind
in the rush.

How I long
for others to know
his raw honesty,
and cheeky humour.
His playful mind
and artistic talent.
His tenderness
and gentle spirit.
His love for Christ
and illuminating insights
challenging
pushing us
deeper into
the kingdom.

There must be
another way.
For
It’s about you
It’s about me
United in Christ.
