Jean's latest journey

Posted by Jean Campbell on 30 Oct 2008

I know I’ll still keep in touch with many of you. After all, an American tradition is the annual Christmas epistle. In terms of my communication as a Mercy Ships missionary, however, this is the final edition....

So, what’s next?
Before I left the Africa Mercy, I posted my résumé online at the urging of my father. As a result of that, I ended up interviewing for a position at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Although I fully expected to return to Richmond and never imagined working in Boston, the position felt like a good fit, using both my management experience as well as my experience as a nurse in Surgery/Trauma intensive care. After a delay in getting my Massachusetts nursing license, I will start as nurse manager for the Surgery ICU and the Trauma/Surgery ICU at Beth Israel on October 27. I continue to marvel at God’s goodness and provision for me in this new season.
Finding a place to live was the next challenge. Would I buy or rent? How far did I want to commute? Which neighborhoods in Boston were better fits for what I wanted? And was it reasonable or unreasonable to expect a place within easy commute that also had outdoor space and off-street parking? After gleaning input from friends, driving around neighborhoods and digging through Craig’s List, I found an apartment on the second floor of an owner-occupied home in a neighborhood of larger homes just over a mile from the hospital, only a few blocks from a T station, and complete with off-street parking and outdoor space. I have two guest rooms, so if you have a desire to visit Boston, let me know!Since coming home I’ve had several opportunities to catch up with family and friends plus enjoy autumn, camping, and hiking.
