Day 12 (Saturday)

Well we’re drawing this trip to a close when we fly home tomorrow afternoon; back to that which I love most: my country, my church and my boys. Whilst it’s been an awesome privilege for Zoe and I to be in this great country to meet and experience the variety of people, places and events in both California and Chicago, I feel re-energised to that which my God has called me to: namely those to whom I belong at Heaton Baptist Church. It will be sad to leave behind Mike, Antje and Daniel Spade, our Willow hosts, who have been lovely to us. And we will have one last opportunity to sample all that is Willow Creek, at their first morning service.

Today has been a processing, chilling and shopping day. I specialise in the first two and Zoe has a Phd in the latter. I think it’s probably her major spiritual gift!! Scouted round for branded sportsgear for les garcons. Chicago is mind boggling for sports fans: It has a basketball team (Bulls), Football team (Bears), not to be confused with the Soccer team (Fire who are outdoor, and Storm indoor), Ice Hockey (Blackhawks and Wolfs), not to mention the 2 major league baseball teams (Cubs and White sox). I tell you, just having the toon and the falcons is a lot simpler.

I’ll probably write one more blog at journey’s end. Just want to say at this juncture how grateful we both are to those who’ve made this trip so memorable: friends old and new, leaders who’ve been kind enough to listen to and answer my questions and give me an inside track, and especially those who’ve ministered the life, grace and power of God. Thanks also to Dave Lowe at the Newcastle end for diligently transferring my semi-literate musings onto the website. As they say on this side of the pond; “good job.”

“Show me your ways..teach me your paths.” (Ps 25:4). This psalm captures David at his reflective best. A powerful king who knew that fullness of life could only be found in pursuit of the great heavenly king. Only in his ways…only by following his paths. “Help me Lord to see what you are doing in this mad world we all inhabit.”
