Day 8 (Tuesday)

Another day of travel, this time from LA to Chicago.

Another day of travel, this time from LA to Chicago. Sorry to leave the Jensens behind – what a fab family they are – but certainly not sad to leave the jungle that is LAX airport. They obviously have a thing about anybody with a maroon coloured passport! Makes Heathrow look like a saunter across Jesmond Dene. Arrived in Chicago and my first battle with the freeways. Even though the car hire satnav started manifesting at one point, our marriage survived (just!), and we managed to arrive safely at the home of Antje and Mike Spade, a Willow family, who we’re staying with here. They seem lovely people and have made us feel very much at home. Never ceases to amaze me the depth of Christian hospitality to be found across the planet. Certainly, I’ve been the recipient of it on a variety of continents now. Thank you Lord.

Writing this whilst planning a day’s sightseeing in the windy city. Notice that in the road opposite, at least half the (lovely) homes have stars and stripes flying. I don’t mind a bit of patriotism; certainly, this massive nation is proud of its history (!!), culture and values. What I love about these guys is their positive, can-do attitude. Bring it on, I say.

Zoe’s still in dreamland. Should I leave her there or take her a cup of tea? Go for the latter cos we’ve got a train to catch downtown in an hour. Speak to you all tomorrow. By the way, I’m thrilled to see God at work out here, but it isn’t nearly as exciting as when I see him at work at Heaton. Must be the way I’m wired.

“The Lord strong and mighty..mighty in battle” (Ps 24:9). I’m pondering today that God is sooo much bigger, stronger, and more powerful than the limitations of my mind, my experience, and my theological constructs. “Help me Lord to resist the temptation of thinking that you are bound by my flawed paradigm of who you are. Help me see more outside the box as more of heaven comes to earth.”
