Day 5 (Saturday)

Went to the ‘healing rooms’ at Bethel this morning, a key aspect of the church’s ministry

Went to the ‘healing rooms’ at Bethel this morning, a key aspect of the church’s ministry as it seeks to fully demonstrate the gospel. I was there to find out what it was about, but I wanted to participate rather than be a visiting spectator. After filling in some paper work about my complaint – I have a slight hearing defect – I was shown into a waiting room area. In this space there were about 50 people of all ages waiting for prayer, some of whom were clearly very ill, and (my guess), some who weren’t Christians. The next couple of hours were a strange mix of powerful, raw emotions, evocative and atmospheric mood setting, lots of smiles and human touch, and, after my name was called, some very direct, faith-filled prayer. All I can say is that I know the Spirit was at work. After a quick road test it was clear something had happened to my hearing. Watch this space over the next couple of weeks until I can validate what God has done.

Left me with loads of questions about the way they do their healing ministry, certainly there are a range of cultural and even behavioural barriers to overcome, but if there’s one thing I’m learning at the mo, it’s not to miss the boat because of differences in styles and approaches. All left me feeling a combination of thoughtful and grateful. Reminded me of the first time I bumped into John Wimber’s ministry at Ansdell Baptist church back in 1982. Plenty of R&R time later to ponder, pray and give thanks. Feels like the gloves are off now. And back tomorrow.

“He who does not swear by what is false,” (Ps24:4). This is the last of David’s pre-conditions of those deemed fit to enter the holy presence of God. I so badly want to be better at seeing the signs of the spirit at work. I’m pretty sure that there are times when God offends the mind to reveal the heart.
