Newcastle Passion

Posted on 18 Mar 2008

With TV viewers tuning in this week to the BBC’s new controversial drama, The Passion, some 400 people in Newcastle will act out their own version of Jesus’ final hours this Friday.
At 11am on Good Friday, the members of six churches in Heaton will raise a cross and begin their “March of Witness” from St Gabriel’s Church on Heaton Road. At the same time, six churches in Walker will carry their cross from St Martin’s while another three churches will meet, lift up a cross and begin walking from St Dominic’s in Shieldfield.
The three processions will converge at Hadrian Square on Shields Road for a midday act of worship and prayer around the three crosses.
The 15 churches, representing the main Christian denominations including Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, Roman Catholic and United Reformed, are part of the Churches Together initiative. The churches will meet again at 6.30am on Easter Sunday morning in Heaton Park, to celebrate Christ’s resurrection.
