Heaton Helps

Heaton HelpsHeaton Helps is a voluntary organisation run by members of Heaton Baptist Church, working in partnership with the primary healthcare team at Falcon House Surgery, Gosforth Social Services, Age Concern, Walker Medical Centre and the East Newcastle Community Resource Team.

It provides a range of home-based services including gardening, decorating and small repairs which clients are unable to perform independently and works to build community by connecting church members with local people who otherwise have no links to HBC.

Our Principles

  • Focus on home-based tasks.
  • Respect for individual autonomy and choice.
  • Emphasis on the little bit of help to make a difference.
  • Recognition of the contribution individuals can make to the community in later years.

Who can use our Service

  • A frail or elderly patient registered with Falcon House Surgery, Age Concern or Social Services and resident in Heaton, Byker or Walker.
  • Socially isolated without family or neighbourly support.

Why Volunteer?

Heaton HelpsBy working in the community in this way we come into contact with many interesting characters who have little or no contact with HBC and can be witnesses to the transforming power of Christ through our acts of service. And above all, Heaton Helps is fun; there is often more talking than working, and never a shortage of tea, brownies or laughter.

We always have a large number of jobs on the go, doing a variety of things. The three main areas we need helpers in are gardening (not landscape gardening, so no skills required), decorating (from stripping to painting to wallpapering) and befriending (having a cup of tea and a chat every month or so).

We are looking to expand our volunteer base and would love to hear from anybody interested in helping out with us. We don’t require any specific time commitments; if you feel you can help out for one morning every two or three months then that would be perfect.

If you attend HBC and would like to get involved in any way, please contact Jackie or Peter. The best way to do this is via email, at heatonhelps@gmail.com; alternatively leave a message on the Heaton Helps answer phone and we can call you back at a suitable time: (0191) 2655478.
