Tearfund - be part of a miracle

I’m sure many of you have received your Teartimes this week and I hope like me you’ve been encouraged by the difference the global church is making around the World. It was good to have Mike Chesterton from Tearfund visit us at HBC and to be reminded of what supporting Tearfund is all about. Tearfund’s mission statement, which Mike explained to us is so full of love, faith and hope:

“We are Christians passionate about the local church bringing justice and transforming lives- overcoming global poverty. And so our ten year vision is to see 50 million people released from material and spiritual poverty through a worldwide network of 100,000 local churches.”

Introduction to reading Luke and Acts

Reading the bible intelligently is a key part of
our spiritual formation. Part of that discipline is to attempt to understand
what the author – in this case Luke – was attempting to convey at the time of
writing. It’s not sufficient to pluck a text out of its contextual moorings,
and apply it to today without attending to what the author had in mind when
first it was written. Download my introduction notes here.

I found myself profoundly moved by the outpouring of affection, when Sir Bobby Robson recently died, after his brave and courageous battle with cancer. Indeed, this afternoon, I joined a few thousand Geordies at St. James', where the memorial service from Durham cathedral was beamed live. It is stupid to set them against each other. It is, for example, stupid to say: “The one thing that matters is to go everywhere and preach the gospel; all other activities such as schools and hospitals and programs for social action are at best merely auxiliary and at worst irrelevant.”

Turning on the tap

More than 30 people walked from Tynemouth to Whitley Bay to raise money for the Samaritan's Purse Turn on the Tap campaign on May 4th. It was great to chat and enjoy each others' company, while remembering that the distance we walked that day is the average distance that people in Africa have to walk to get fresh water. We raised around £400. (more)

Ask the pastor: Why are believers afraid of dying?

The first in a new series where HBC senior pastor Mark Elder answers
questions from... well, anyone really. This week: new research suggests
believers with a terminal illness are more reluctant to die than
atheists. So Mark, why are Christians reluctant to meet their maker? (more)

in Cape Town for a taxi. I hadn't slept much the night before, or
indeed the night before that. When I did manage to nod off, I was
haunted by dreams of giant sharks tearing my limbs off and I would wake

Slumdog millionaire

Ruth and I recently went to see the film Slumdog Millionaire which is creating a lot of noise in the media after receiving an Oscar for best picture. Initially we were put off seeing it with stories of violence, poverty, and sexual exploitation. Were we somehow implicitly guilty in going to the cinema to see this for entertainment and then return to our safe, warm house? Were we just voyeurs, looking over to India, and seeing something awful and turning away?

He matters

One of our big 12 values is Unity and Diversity. We understand that people matter to God - whatever our shape, size, age, ethnicity, background, job or theological perspective, we cherish our diversity yet recognise that our power is in our mutuality and togetherness. What a challenge! Is this everyone’s experience at HBC?
The following poem is written for anyone who feels on the edge of HBC for whatever reason, but on a personal level it’s for Neill.

Prosperity: time for a rethink

Like most Christians in the UK, I have been troubled over the years by teaching, mainly from the USA, that says that Christians have a right to be rich. “Why drive a Datsun with a Daimler faith,” is the sentiment. When you’ve been overseas to the third world, as I have on a number of occasions, and you see real faith and incredible poverty, you realise how flawed and offensive this version of prosperity teaching is. But are we in danger of doing a baby and bath water here?

Sunday morning preview

This Sunday I will be speaking on the first half of Ephesians 5, in which God calls us to live as imitators of God, as lights in a dark world. We don't have to look very far to believe we are living a dark world, but how are we doing at seeing ourselves both as individuals and a community, as lights in the darkness? The truth is, it's an impossible task unless we are filled with the Holy
Spirit but do we know what that really means? This Sunday I hope to at
least scratch the surface of what it looks like for Heaton Baptist to
be a community of Spirit-filled life lights. Come on!
